Description:
Draft autobiography through September 1847, recording Smith's experiences in New York; Kirtland, Ohio; Missouri; and Nauvoo, Illinois. Also records Zion's Camp travel; missions in the states and England; and exodus west. Many entries are copied directly from Smith's journals with some editing (includes copies of journal entries for 1845-1847 for which no originals are available in this collection). Copied by Historian's Office clerks Thomas C. Armstrong, Robert L. Campbell, Richard Bentley, John Jaques, and Joan M. Campbell.

Journal, circa 1840-1847

Description:
Volume contains several reminiscent accounts. First account, in George A. Smith's handwriting, is titled "George A. Smith's Biography" and gives a brief account of Smith's early life, including visit of his uncle Joseph Smith Sr. and cousin Don Carlos Smith to John Smith's family in New York in August 1830. Second account summarizes Smith's baptism and activities in the Church from 1832 through 4 November 1839. A third account, written in 1845, is titled "Journal series 1" and records 1835 missionary travels in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. A fourth account, written in 1840, details mission with Don Carlos Smith to southeastern Missouri, seeking funds to purchase Daviess County lands, September-December 1838, their return journey, and exodus from Missouri in spring 1839. Volume also contains Bathsheba W. Smith's journal entries, February 9-March 1, 1846, recording travel from Nauvoo, with one entry for April 2, 1847. Also includes copies of blessings and early Smith family genealogy.

Records British Mission activities in the Staffordshire Potteries and Macclesfield, February-April 1841, including minutes of Macclesfield and Leeds conferences. Also records return journey and activities in Nauvoo, May 1841-July 1842; brief preaching mission in Illinois with Amasa Lyman, September-October 1842; electioneering mission for Joseph Smith's presidential candidacy in Illinois and Michigan, May-July 1844, including minutes of Comstock, Pleasant Valley, and Franklin, Michigan conferences; and activities in Nauvoo, including meetings with the Twelve, the Seventies, and the Nauvoo Legion, difficulties with Sidney Rigdon and James Emmett, and mob threats, September 1844-March 1845. Includes copies of letters to George A. Smith from his father, John Smith, March 27 and June 17, 1840 from Montrose, Iowa, and copy of 1835 blessing. Also includes later entry relating conversation with Joseph Smith on May 15, 1844 concerning W. W. Phelps. Also includes addresses and other sundry notations.
