    Nauvoo Military papers, 1840-1847.
    Description:
    Military and financial papers accumulated by Rockwood. Includes 1832 commission in Massachusetts militia; 1841 commission in Nauvoo Legion signed by Illinois governor Thomas Carlin; and papers from Fifty-ninth Regiment of Illinois militia, consisting of 1840 certificate of election as captain, signed by Major Don C. Smith, and 1841 certificate signed by Colonel Levi Williams. There are also papers relating to Rockwood's duties as commander of Joseph Smith's Nauvoo Legion guard, including receipts for arms and accoutrements, rolls of lieutenant-general's staff, and orders issued by Major General Jonathan Dunham on 27 June 1844. Also includes 1846 draft letter from Rockwood to O. M. Allen concerning use of his wagon and oxen and Rockwood's copy of Brigham Young's orders of 19 February 1847 to John Scott regarding a cannon. Later papers include Rockwood's 1857 certificate of appointment as commissary general in Nauvoo Legion, signed by Brigham Young; financial papers, including tax receipts and accounts with Edward Martin, William Jennings, and W. S. Godbe; Rockwood's 1872 draft report about Zion's Cooperative Fish Farm; and 1877 letter from U. S. geologist G. K. Gilbert.
