Account of Smithies's departure from Nauvoo in February 1846 and travel across Iowa. Continues with journey from Winter Quarters to the Salt Lake Valley, June-September 1847, and activities in the valley until October 1848. Includes descriptions of encounters with Indians. There are sporadic entries for his activities between 1852 and 1859, particularly relating to his musical interests.
Includes copies of letters from Heber C. Kimball in July and August 1847, relating news from the vanguard company and giving advice to avoid contracting mountain fever; a letter from Solon Foster in St. George in 1863; copies of songs entitled "Israels' Coming" by W.W. Phelps and "Harvest Song;" and family genealogical records through 1873.
