    Summary:

    Recounts early life in Maine, conversion to the Church, move to Ohio in 1838, experiences in Nauvoo, mission travels, emigration to Utah, and activities during the Utah War and encounters with the Indians. Includes account of his activities in the Salmon River Mission, and missionary travels in Iowa and Nebraska. Volume one includes partial diary of his son, Benjamin F. Cummings, Jr., recording his mission in New England, 1876.
